Project case study

Design, fitting and craftsmanship details

A dark open bookcase used as both display furniture and a room-dividing feature, with a varied grid of shelves and carefully aligned vertical structure.

  • Dark open shelving used as a room-dividing feature
  • Varied grid of vertical and horizontal openings
  • Display storage visible from multiple room angles
  • Large-scale structure integrated with the interior

A bookcase that also defines the room

This project uses an open bookcase as more than display storage. The dark shelving forms a visual division within the room while still allowing light, views and movement through the open grid.

Because the piece is visible from several directions, the structure has to work as furniture from both close range and across the wider interior.

The demanding part: repeated alignment across a large grid

The design relies on many repeated horizontal shelves and vertical divisions. That makes small setting-out errors easy to see, particularly where several openings line up across the full height and width of the installation.

The varied compartment sizes also need to remain visually deliberate so the composition feels balanced rather than random.

Open display without making the room feel enclosed

The open arrangement allows decorative objects, books and accessories to be displayed while keeping visual connections between the adjoining parts of the room.

Using open sections rather than a solid wall gives the furniture a lighter architectural role, even though the dark finish gives the piece a strong presence.

Detail, depth and multiple viewpoints

Closer photographs show the depth of the shelving and the relationship between the heavier outer frame and the smaller internal divisions. These details are especially important because the furniture is experienced from several angles rather than from one front elevation only.

The wider room views confirm how the shelving relates to seating, lighting and the surrounding architecture, which is essential when a fitted piece also acts as a spatial divider.

The finished result

The completed bookcase provides substantial display capacity while creating a clear architectural division within the room. Its open grid keeps the interior connected, while the dark finish gives the structure enough visual weight to anchor the space.
